Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed modular approach developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the National Center for PTSD to assist individuals of all ages and families in the immediate aftermath of disasters and terrorism. It acknowledges that those affected may face new challenges and struggle with various reactions, encompassing physical, psychological, behavioral, and spiritual aspects. PFA aims to reduce initial distress, promote short- and long-term adaptive functioning, and does not assume that all survivors will develop severe mental health problems. Instead, it emphasizes compassionate support from disaster responders to facilitate recovery by addressing a range of early reactions experienced by those affected.

This handbook is not intended to be a substitute for the role of professionals with expertise in counseling trauma victims. Nothing in life can prepare you for the horror of an act of terrorism that robs you of your sense of security. No one expects such a thing to happen. Violent crime is an abnormal event and terrorism is even more rare.
